My Experience
Visitors from around the world love Greece for its beautiful island and whitewashed buildings and as the birthplace of art, science and philosophy. But it is also a wonderful place to live. Like many Americans, I made Greece one of my vacation spots, visiting the sun-washed islands in the Aegean Sea and always taking in the culture and buzz of Athens in mainland Greece. But recently I discovered the southern Peloponnese, an area I instantly fell in love with. This is the vast mountainous area south of Athens that is full of folklore and history, and where olive groves abound. It is the only part of Greece that is surrounded by the Aegean, Mediterranean and Ionian seas. It was a place to call home.
Ten years ago I was thinking about where to live in my retirement years. I knew I wanted to live in a warm climate,  next to the ocean, to experience a different lifestyle and to live well . But the Sunbelt states weren’t for me. Southern California was too expensive. And I ruled out Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, Central and South America because of their endemic poverty and, in some cases, political unrest. Finally I chose Greece.
Four years ago I purchased land 12km (8 miles) south of the regional city of Kalamata on the side of a hill overlooking the sea in the southern Peloponnese. I hired an architect to design a house and a contractor to build it. The result was a wonderful high-quality stone and plaster villa with 180 degree views of the sea,  mountain views at the rear of the house and a five minute walk to a glorious sandy beach. All at a fraction of what a seaside home would cost in the United States or northern Europe...
